Amsterdam Museum

The Amsterdam Museum (previously known as Amsterdam Historical Museum) tells the fascinating tale of how a little fishing village grew and prospered into the cosmopolitan city it is today.

The museum’s collection is rich in paintings, objects and archaeological findings that bring to life the fortunes of many of its past and present inhabitants. The exhibits range from the medieval leather children’s shoe and the bird’s eye view map of Amsterdam that Cornelis Antonisz made in 1538, to the impressive Golden Age paintings of the members of a rifle guild. Photographs and films feature the city’s inhabitants in happy and tragic circumstances: the poverty that prevailed in the Jordaan neighbourhood in the nineteenth century but also the idealistic movements of the sixties and the successes achieved by the football club Ajax.

Besides these diverse exhibits, multimedia presentations bring the past to life. The Amsterdam Museum offers something for everybody to enjoy.
