The VU University Amsterdam is a general university with strong Christian roots. Studies on religious, scientific, cultural, political and historical aspects of the Protestant tradition are all part of the research carried out at the university. The Special Collections department of the University Library focuses on collecting information sources for this research. In addition to written and printed texts from or with regard to the Protestant tradition, portraits of the main figures have also been brought together. Those portrayed are mainly Dutch but not all of them. The collection, with approximately 1500 portraits on paper, also has images of Calvin, for example.
